Presumably Latin ursus ‘bear’ + Opuntia. Application unknown (publication not seen). Perhaps named for Swiss botanist Urs Eggli, who published an article about the type species (Urs Eggli & Beat Ernst Leuenberg, On colour forms of Opuntia weberi (Cactaceae) with notes on the typification of the name, Willdenowia 28, 1998: 175-180) or a wordplay involving Salmonopuntia, a name published on the same page.
