Etymology

Presumably Latin ursus ‘bear’ + Opuntia. Application unknown (publication not seen). Perhaps named for Swiss botanist Urs Eggli, who published an article about the type species (Eggli & Leuenberger in Willdenowia 28: 175-180. 1998) or a wordplay involving Salmonopuntia, a name published on the same page.
