Latin pecten (stem pectÄn-) ‘comb’ + Latin –fer (feminine –fÄ•ra) ‘bearing’. For the spines, described by Buining as “disposed perpendicularly from each areole in a bunch which forms a perfect continuous comb with those from adjacent areoles”.
