Latin gummi ‘gum’ + Latin βferΒ (feminine βfΔra) βcarryingβ. For the gum-like mucilage in the plant body. Backeberg & Voll: “Strangely enough – and hence the name – the species is completely filled with a gelatinous, colorless and sticky mass, which is why grafting is very difficult.” See also Gummocactus.
