Etymology

Greek kentÄ“tÄ“rion ‘pricker, awl’. Not explained by Pfeiffer, presumably for the spination.

Based on Echinocactus centeterius, which is now considered a synonym of Gymnocalycium mostii. Ritter: “This new combination [Uebelmannia centeteria] is based on a remarkably gross misidentification” (“Diese Umkombination beruht auf einer denkbar groben Falschbestimmung”) (Kakteen Südamerika 1: 212. 1979). “In the case of such a gross misidentification, Schnabel’s concluding words are surprising: ‘”‘Perhaps this example can serve as a warning against careless decisions in the field of taxonomy.'”‘ It can indeed serve as such an example, but in a different sense than Schnabel intended it to be, as he himself has here made a taxonomic decision too easily (to avoid using his term ‘careless’)” (Kakteen Südamerika 3: 985. 1980).
