Named for Dutch cactus enthusiast Albert Frederik Hendrik Buining (1901-1976), who discovered the species together with Leopoldo Horst in Brazil in 1966/1967. Donald: “It gives me great pleasure to name the plant in honour of one of its co-discoverers, an eminent authority of the S. American cactaceae, member of the I.O.S. and President of the Netherlands Cactus Society, my old and dear friend Albert Buining, Burgermaster of Hamersveld.”
