Named for German cactus enthusiast Karl Schmiedicke (1870-1926). BΓΆdeker: “I am naming this strange plant after our Berlin member [of the of the German Cactus Society], my friend Karl Schmiedicke, who unfortunately died too early. He was a quiet but excellent Echinocactus expert and grower of rare zeal and many of the ablest among us, even Professor [Karl] Schumann, knew how to appreciate and use his knowledge and skill.”
