Latin rŭber (stem rŭbr-) ‘red’ + Latin –flōrus ‘-flowered’. For the flower color. Frank: “The outer petals are pale pink with a broad red-brown center stripe, the inner petals are pink with a dark pink center stripe.” Charles Glass, who discovered the taxon, gave it the provisional name “Purple Schwarzii” and described the flowers as “red” (quoted by Frank).
