🌡 Type Tunilla soehrensii
Etymology

Spanish tunilla, diminutive of tuna β€˜prickly pear’ (Opuntia). Published as a replacement name for Airampoa. In the protologue of Cactus ayrampo Haenke the “ayrampo” is referred to as “a kind of tunilla”.

Not to be confused with Cereus [“Gruppe”] Tunilla Vaupel.

Mottram (Cactician 4. 2014):

Tunilla D.R.Hunt & Iliff was published to replace Airampoa Frič, because its type was thought to be unidentifiable. However, both type species can be referred to the same widespread taxon, which makes the two generic names synonymous. Even when the types are treated as different species, both names apply to the same taxonomic group, so Tunilla includes the type of Airampoa and is therefore illegitimate for that reason.
