Latin pecten (stem pectĭn-) ‘comb’ + Latin –fer ‘bearing’. Albesiano: “Species characterized by the distribution of radial spines in adult areoles, where the radials are appressed to the surface of the stem and pectinate (organized like the teeth of a comb).” Not to be confused with Cereus pectinifer (= Echinocereus reichenbachii), Echinopsis pectinifera (= Echinocereus pectinatus) and Lobivia pectinifera (= Echinopsis densispina).
