Etymology

Not explained by Ocampo. Presumably Latin trĭbŭlus ‘thorn bush, thistle, caltrop’ + Latin –āria, a suffix used to create generic names (cf. Mammillaria, Opuntia subgen. Sphaeraria). For the spination. Ocampo called the genus cardonero in Spanish. Misspelled Fribularia on p. 68.

Tribularia Heist. (1748) is just a name.
