Latin aurantÄăcus ‘orange’. Publication not seen. Both the flowers and the spines are orange (subsp. conothelos: spines white, flowers magenta, purple, white or yellow). According to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) for the flower color.
