Etymology

Greek tephra ‘ashes’ + Opuntia. A proposed new name for Tephrocactus to indicate the affinity to Opuntia.

Knip & Van den Houten: “[Schumann’s division of the subfamily Opuntioideae in the genera Opuntia, Nopalea, Pterocactus and Maihuenia] seems very practical to us. Possibly one might consider changing the name Tephrocactus to Tephropuntia. This is clearer. […] So instead of the old genus Opuntia, we get three new genera: Cylindropuntia, Platyopuntia, Tephropuntia” (“Deze verdeeling lijkt ons heel practisch. Eventueel zou zijn te overwegen den naam Tephrocactus te veranderen in Tephropuntia. Dit spreekt duidelijker. […] In plaats van het oude geslacht Opuntia krijgen we dus drie nieuwe geslachten: Cylindropuntia, Platyopuntia, Tephropuntia“).
