Greek aulax (stem aulak-) ‘furrow’ + Greek thÄ“lē ‘nipple’. Weber: “At the upper part of the tubercles [on the epidermis] there is an areole in the form of a 3 mm long longitudinal furrow […]” (“A la partie supérieure des mamelons se trouve une aréole en forme de sillon longitudinal de 3 millimètres de long […])”.
