Latin abdÄtus ‘hidden, concealed, secret’. Ferguson & Janeba (quoted in IPNI): “The epithet ‘abditus’ means hidden secret, which nicely characterizes the literally hidden life of this cryptic cactus species; the plants are extremely difficult to find unless in flower.”
