Etymology

Latin glădÄus ‘sword’ + Latin –spÄ«nus ‘-spined’. For the sword-like spines. Taylor & Olsthoorn (in Bradleya 40: 68. 2022) corrected the epithet to gladiispina, presumably to conform to article 60.10 of the International Code of Nomenclature (gladi + connecting vowel i + spina), but the original spelling gladispina, being “in accordance with classical usage”, is correct under Rec. 60G.1 (Stearn, Botanical Latin. 3rd Edition: 286. 1983: “In classical Latin compounds, when a stem ended in –i, […] this sufficed as a connecting vowel, a single –i– being used, instead of the –ii– which would result from joining the final –i of the stem and a connecting vowel –i-“).
