Etymology

Latin sub– ‘somewhat’ + Greek pilos ‘wool’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. For the “somewhat hairy areoles” (“areolis subpilosi”). Backeberg referred to the species in this genus as “the almost hairless β€žPilocereiβ€œ [see Pilocereus] from Venezuela and Columbia […]”.
