Etymology

Latin discus β€˜quoit, disc’ + Latin –formis ‘-shaped’. For the shape of the plant body. The name is not very distinctive: De Candolle described both Mammillaria sempervivi and this species as “disc-shaped” on the same page; apparently no better name came to mind.
