Etymology

Greek strōma (stem strōmat-) ‘anything spread or laid out for lying or sitting upon, mattress, bed’ + Greek karpos ‘fruit’. Attributed in IPNI to Theodor Rümpler (Handb. Cacteenk. (ed. 2 - Rümpler). 1886), but the name mentioned there (p. 232) is Stromatocactus.

Stromatocarpus Falkenberg (1897) is a genus of red algae.
