🌵 Type Stromatocactus kotschoubeyi
Etymology

Greek strōma (stem strōmat-) ‘anything spread or laid out for lying or sitting upon, mattress, bed’ + Cactus. Rümpler’s German translation Breitwarzencactus (breit ‘wide, spread out’ + Warz ‘wart, tubercle’ + Cactus) suggests that he interpretated the name, which he called an “unfortunate choice”, as a reference to the flattened tubercles, but Karwinsky may have chosen it in reference to the very flat habit of Stromatocactus kotschoubeyi (= Ariocarpus kotschoubeyanus), which in habitat never rises above ground level.

The first publication of this name has always been attributed to Rümpler, but Stromatocactus kotschoubeyi is already mentioned (as a synonym of Anhalonium kotschoubeyanum) in Bull. Cercle Gén. Hort. i: 61. 1844.
