Named for American botanist George Thurber (1821-1890), who collected the species. Engelmann: “I have dedicated this to the collector, Mr. George Thurber, of Rhode Island, an excellent botanist, who has kindly furnished me with the materials for this article.”
The species is known in Sinaloa and Sonora under the Mayo name aaqui ‘pitaya’ (David Yetman, The Great Cacti: Ethnobotany & Biogeography: 279. 2007) and in Baja California as pitaya dulce ‘sweet pitaya’ (Weber in Bull. Mus. Hist. Nat. (Paris) 1895: 317. 1895).
