Greek koptōn (stem koptont-) ‘cutting, cleaving, dividing’ + Greek –gōnos ‘angled, ribbed’ (Lemaire: “Κόπτων, secans; Γωνος, angulus”). For the strong ribs (Lemaire: “valide costatus”).
The original epithet coptonogonus, used by both Lemaire and Berger, is correctable to coptontogonus under International Code of Nomenclature. Compare the prefix onto– from Greek ōn (stem ont-) ‘being’. Sometimes miscorrected to coptogonus.
