Etymology

Latin trĭangŭlāris ‘triangular’. For the number of ribs (“angles”). Linnaeus named several cactus species for this feature: Cactus triangularis (3), Cactus tetragonus (4); Cactus pentagonus (“almost 5”), Cactus hexagonus (6) and Cactus heptagonus (7). Perhaps he used the Latin triangularis rather than the Greek trigonus for this species to match the pre-Linnaean name Cactus triangularis scandens articulatus.

Rhipsalis triangularis was named after this species.
