Etymology

Greek pteron ‘wing, feathers’ + Greek anthos ‘flower’. Not explained by Dietrich. Presumably for the feather-like outer perianth segments. Not for the “winged petals” (Genaust, Etymologisches Wörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 3. Auflage. 1996).
