Etymology

Greek megas (stem megal-) ‘big’ + Greek anthos β€˜flower’. For the size of the flowers, considered by Vaupel to be the biggest of all cactus species except Cereus urbanianus (= Selenicereus grandiflorus). The epithet has the same meaning as that of Selenicereus grandiflorus (Latin grandis β€˜large’ + Latin –flōrus ‘flowered’).
