Etymology

Named for American botanist and cactus expert Dorothea “Dorde” Woodruff (1928-2018), who discovered the species in 1961. She was already divorced from her first husband Robert Wright when Benson published the name. Kipp Lee (Sego Lily 42(2): 20. 2019): “Without consulting Dorde or realizing she had remarried, Benson named Sclerocactus wrightiae after her using her divorced name in 1966. This would always be a mild irritation to her.”
