Named for American topographical engineer Captain Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817-1863), the commander of the expedition during which the species was discovered.
The English names Heil’s devil’s-claw cactus and Reeves’ devil’s-claw cactus given for this species by Edward F. Anderson (The Cactus Family. 2001) are based on Sclerocactus whipplei var. heilii and Sclerocactus whipplei var. reevesii, which are now considered synonyms of Sclerocactus cloverae.
