Latin intermÄ•dÄus ‘intermediate’. Peebles considered Sclerocactus intermedius intermediate between Sclerocactus whipplei and Sclerocactus polyancistrus. “The plant body and spines are similar to the latter species but the flowers are smaller and the style is puberulent as in S. Whipplei.”
