Named for American botanist Elzada Urseba Clover (1897-1980), “who conducted field studies of Sclerocactus on the southern Colorado Plateau in the late 1930’s” (Heil & Porter). She described Sclerocactus parviflorus and Sclerocactus havasupaiensis (= Sclerocactus parviflorus subsp. havasupaiensis).
