Etymology

Ribes + –aceae, the suffix denoting a plant family. Publication by Endlicher not seen. Christian Heß (Spezielle Pflanzenkunde 2: 460-466. 1846) called this family Fackelblumen ‘torch flowers’ in German and included the genera Mammillaria, Melocactus, Echinocactus, Cactus, Rhipsalis, Lepismium, Opuntia, Pereskia and Ribes (now in the family Grossulariaceae).

Ribes was included in Cactaceae Juss. (1789) by Jussieu.
