Arabic rībās ‘Syrian rhubarb (Rheum ribes)’. Named for this plant because of the sour taste of the berries.
This genus was included in Cactaceae by Antoine Laurent de Jussieu (1789), but is now placed in the family Grossulariaceae and considered not closely related to cacti.
