Latin occĭdentālis ‘western’. Barthlott & Rauh: “The specific epithet “occidentalis” means “western” and refers to the isolated occurrence of the species within a Formenkreis [Rhipsalis subgen. Phyllarthrorhipsalis] otherwise only known from eastern South America.”
