Latin flăgellum ‘whip’, also ‘young branch or shoot, vine-shoot’ + Latin –formis ‘shaped’. For “its striking similarity in habit to the well known Mexican rat-tail cactus, Aporocactus, now Disocactus flagelliformis” (= Aporocactus flagelliformis).
