Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri
(Regel) Moran (1953)
Etymology
🌵 Author(s) | Reid Moran |
🌵 Basionym | Epiphyllum russellianum var. gaertneri (1884) |
🌵 Basionym author(s) | Eduard August von Regel |
🌵 Type of | Epiphyllopsis |
Named for a Mr. Gärtner of Blumenau, Brazil, who introduced the species to Europe (Regel). Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) identify Gärtner as a German-born physician named Karl F. Gaertner who died in 1850, presumably German physician and botanist Karl Friedrich von Gärtner (1772-1850). This is unlikely as Karl Friedrich von Gärtner died 34 years before the taxon was described, as far as could be ascertained never lived in Brazil and would have been referred to as ‘Dr. Gärtner’ rather than ‘Mr. (Herr) Gärtner’ by Regel.
Regel spelled the basionym Epiphyllum Russelianum var. Gärtneri.
