Greek neos ‘new’ + cumingii. Named for English natural history collector in Chile Hugh Cuming (1791-1865). Weingartia neocumingii was a new name for Echinocactus cumingii Salm-Dyck (= Echinocactus cumingii Regel & Klein bis), which is an illegitimate younger homonym of Echinocactus cumingii Hopffer. The combination Weingartia cumingii (Hopffer) Backeb. (1939) was based on Hopffer’s name.
