Greek hēlios ‘sun’ + Latin –ōsus ‘full of’. Not explained by Rausch. Presumably for the abundant bright orange flowers, but according to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) “for the numerous closely set areoles with stellate spination”.
