Greek ēōs ‘dawn, morning, day’. Not explained by Rausch. Perhaps for the variable flower color: according to Rausch on some days “very light white-pink”, on others “almost white”.
With three letters, eos is the shortest epithet in the cactus family (the longest is that of Discocactus subterraneoproliferans).
