Etymology

Named for Albert Einstein (1879-1955).

During the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia, Frič “informed the German ambassador that he intended to name a cactus after Hitler. When the latter congratulated him on that great idea, he said dryly that it was a weak species that would soon perish anyway. He then showed a beautiful cactus that he had named after Albert Einstein, who had fled from Nazi Germany: Rebutia einsteinii” (Theo Heijnsdijk, Succulenta (Netherlands) 94(1): 7-9. 2015).
