Latin bŏrĕālis ‘northern’. Diers & Krahn: “Due to its characteristics, the species described here is to be regarded as the northernmost of the group of the so-called true Rebutias with the type species Rebutia minuscula K. Schumann. Therefore, the epithet “borealis” (= northern) is chosen for it.”
