Greek himas (stem himant-) ‘strap’ + Greek klados ‘branch’. For the shape of the stems. The epithet is often misspelled himanthoclada under the influence of Greek anthos ‘flower’. Compare the name of the moss genus Himantocladium (Mitt.) M.Fleisch. (1908).
