Greek pseudo– ‘false, appearing to be’ + Echinopsis. For the similarity in habit to “certain small globular Echinopsis“. Backeberg’s (invalid) subgenus included the species Lobivia aurea and Lobivia cylindrica (now both considered synonyms of Echinopsis aurea). The combinations Pseudoëchinopsis aurea and Pseudoëchinopsis cylindrica are occasionally found in the literature. Sometimes spelled Pseudo-echinopsis.
