Greek poly ‘many’ + Greek anthos ‘flower’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. According to Byles (in Natl. Cact. Succ. J. 11(1): 26. 1956) a “slip of the pen” for Micranthocereus. Presumably based on trib.(?) Polyanthocerei Backeb. (1935, Kaktus-ABC), the name of which refers to the fact that the areoles often bear several flowers at the same time.
