Nahuatl chichipe or chichibe, vernacular names for the species in Mexico. Roland-Gosselin: “The natives call it Chichipe. The fruit is sold in the markets under the name Chichituna. According to Mr. [Léon] Diguet, the word Chichi means gland in Nahuatl, hence the name of the plant, after the shape of the fruit.”
