Alo + Latin –ensis, geographical suffix. For the occurrence in the Sierra del Alo (also spelled Sierra (de) Lalo and Sierra del Halo), Jalisco, Mexico. Roland-Gosselin: “Species encountered by Mr. [Léon] Diguet in the Sierra del Alo (hence the name)”. Britton & Rose misspelled the epithet when they published the combination Cephalocereus aleusis.
