Publication not seen. Greek pilos ‘wool, felt cap’ or Latin pĭlus ‘hair’ + Greek –opsis ‘looking like’ (Mottram in Cactician 4: 260. 2014; Byles in Natl. Cact. Succ. J. 11(1): 25. 1956). According to Quattrocchi (CRC World Dictionary of Plant Names iii: 2072. 2000) the second part of the name refers to the genus Echinopsis.
