Greek pilos ‘wool’ + Greek akantha ‘spine’ (the compound should correctly be Pilacanthus). For the hair-like spines. Not from “Gr.” (actually Latin) pīleus ‘cap, hat’ + Greek anthos ‘flower’ (Boerner, Taschenwörterbuch der botanischen Pflanzennamen. 4. Auflage. 1989).
