Etymology

Latin pilatus ‘armed with javelins’ + Cereus, the name of a genus of columnar cacti and a designation for columnar cacti in general. Presumably a reference to the spination, but primarily intended to sound similar to Pilocereus. Byles and Rowley suggested Pilatocereus and Pilosocereus as possible replacement names for the illegitimate Pilocereus, formally publishing Pilosocereus in 1957.
