Etymology

Named for a Captain Porter, who collected the species near Topolobampo, Sinaloa, Mexico. According to Eggli & Newton (Etymological Dictionary of Succulent Plant Names. 2004) this is American botanist Thomas Conrad Porter (1822-1901).
