Etymology

Latin Brandegeeĭi, genitive (possessive) form of Brandegeeĭus, latinization of Brandegee (see Art. 60.9 Ex. 31, International Code of Nomenclature). Named for American botanist Townshend Stith Brandegee (1843-1925). Schumann published Opuntia brandegeei as a new name for Brandegee’s Opuntia rotundifolia Brandegee, an illegitimate younger homonym of Schumann’s Opuntia rotundifolia K.Schum. (= Pereskiopsis rotundifolia).
