Latin trānsmontānus ‘beyond the mountains’. For the distribution of the taxon. Engelmann divided Cereus greggii (= Peniocereus greggii) into two varieties: Cereus greggii var. cismontanus (‘on this side of the mountains’) (= Peniocereus greggii subsp. greggii) and Cereus greggii var. transmontanus (‘on the other side of the mountains’), presumably referring to the Sierra Madre Oriental.
