Etymology

Parodi + Latin -a, the recommended suffix to form plant genus names from personal names that end with a vowel other than a (Rec. 60B.1(a), International Code of Nomenclature). Named in memory of Domingo Parodi (1823–1890), “one of the first researchers of the Paraguayan flora and who provided the first botanical articles of the then-nascent Argentine Scientific Society”.

This is a replacement name for Hickenia. A second replacement name, Neohickenia, was published in 1928.
